Albada Old Vines Garnacha 2015

I’ve got to say, I was struck by how elegant the bottle of this wine looked. I’m not sure why, but I was! There are two Trader Joe’s that I go to, one likes to separate the wines by type, the other separates them by region. I love looking at where wines are from, and have yet to find one I LOVE from Spain. And I think this one was no exception.

Price: $4.99 !!(Crazy price)

Type: Red Blend – ” The principal grape variety is Garnacha (60%). Others include Macabeo or Viura (20%) and Tempranillo (16%), with the remaining 4% being a mix of experimental varieties: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. ” From http://www.wine.com

First Impressions: It is OAKEY and SMOKEY! I haven’t found a red that tasted so thick in your mouth but was actually that watery-red. This can be explained because Grenache’s have low tannin levels, but are also very full bodied- makes tones of sense, now! It was very smokey, and oakey, but it really lacked the richness that usually pairs with those tastes. There were definitely undertones of fruit, and almost like a tea. I read another review that said sometimes a Garnacha will have tones of black tea, and that hits the nail on the head!

Pairings: BBQ or rich meat dishes

Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%

RATING: 3/5
